A Letter from Correigh
- Nov.2, 2001
I'm now Dr. Greene,
I've left California, and now I'm in Seattle doing
a postdoc (move over lizards, it's time to study
salmon!). I'm loving the city life, the drizzle
and fog (yes, rain is a nice thing for me, after
years of too much sun), Mt Olympus rising in the
distance through the clouds, and Puget Sound lapping
quietly just a couple of miles from my house.
Most of my time at work so far has been spent
writing programs, but hopefully things will soon
take a more field-oriented turn.
I'm glad to finally
be out of school. To think that the last 25 years
of my life I've been in school, and now it's finally
over. The P H D is nice, but the notion of no
more tests, classes, grades, and what not is what
makes me most happy. Sometimes my enjoyment of
my newfound freedom can be a little rough on my
girlfriend Jen, who has started a masters program
at UW and is feeling pretty overwhelmed. Before
we left for Seattle (while she was still working
for a biotech firm, and a bit frustrated that
we hadn't gone hiking, skiing, and backpacking
as much as she wanted due to my academic constraints),
we made a pact that we'd go hiking at least once
every three weeks once we moved. That pact was
quickly broken after her school assignments piled
up. We still have yet to go to the Olympic Peninsula,
although we have managed a few quick trips to
the Cascades. Now I'm going to be the frustrated
partner!
